The English label, and also the home of Miss Kittin, James Holden and, no joke, Infected Mushroom – Resist records continues its "At The Controls" compilation series. The site of this notorious label says that this project is a unique study of the hearts and minds of the most famous and innovative DJs in the world. Previously the experiments were conducted on artists such as M.A.N.D.Y., James Holden and Claude Von Stroke. This time the role of being dissected at the DJ booth fell to the French techno producer Sebastien Devaud, better known under the alias Agoria.

Sebastien's path resembles the life journeys of the heroes of the electronic scene of our time: a passion for jazz and Detroit techno, churning out mixtapes at the speed of light and gigs (not always successful) from apartments to stadiums – how is that any different from Laurent Garnier or Jeff Mills?
The debut album "Blossom" made Agoria a notable figure on the French electronic scene: club bangers and coy deep overtures coexisted beautifully on a single record, painting the image of an eclectic, thinking producer. In the mix "Cute & Cult" Sebastien demonstrated his musical breadth, bringing together the father of punk rock Iggy Pop with the Chilean minimalist Luciano, and the indie rockers Radiohead with the electronic act Swayzak. The latest record "The Green Armchair" confirmed Devaud's status as a musician striving to go beyond boundaries and well-trodden paths.

The present compilation contains two discs; on the first Agoria plays with such styles as deep, minimal tech-house, IDM. Among others, in the tracklist you can spot the Turkish minimalist Onur Ozer, the Englishmen Swayzak, the techno women Anja Schneider and Chloe, as well as the IDM veterans Plaid. The mix begins fairly gently, but gaining strength, by the middle it's already pounding with the kick drum so hard it could give even Juan Atkins himself a run for his money – I'd write "Detroit" here, only that wouldn't be true; in short, the feeling is as if a large-scale rave, à la "the Forts" or "Love Parade," is happening in your headphones your apartment your workplace your airplane, and clearly this feeling is no accident – the mix was recorded during Agoria's tour this summer, and he himself admitted that the inspiration for this disc was his performances in various corners of the world.

The second disc is a more avant-garde and less danceable selection of assorted material. Of course, it didn't get by here without four-four either, but entirely different meters prevail here. The second track on this compilation is performed by the English rockers who once laid the foundations of goth in music, Bauhaus – 'Bela Lugosi's Dead'; next come the experimentalists Murcof, Fairmont and Telepopmusik. The closing composition is from Sascha Ring, aka Apparat, the man who breathed new life into IDM when it was already writhing in convulsions.

The 34-year-old Dane got into music back in school, banging on drums in a local rock band. In 1999, together with his friend DJ Tom (T.O.M.), he created the tech-house project Trigbag. Then he went into solo work (he and Tom now play only at raves), and here he achieved quite a lot: one of the key figures on the Audiomatique and Poker Flat labels, a talented remixer – "What Else Is There?" by Royksopp, sung by the vocalist from the Swedish duo The Knife and remixed by Trentemoller, became the number-one club hit of 2006. The debut album "The Last Resort," dated that very same 2006, brought Andreas fame and respect from such polar-opposite publications as, say, The New Yorker, Groove and Trax, the last of which even named him artist of the year. The Dane's work delighted David Lynch, the maestro of independent cinema, author of "Mulholland Drive" and "Eraserhead," who offered Trentemoller a joint project. Back home this year Trentemoller won awards in the "Best Electronic Album" and "Best Producer" categories for his album.

The new work will include two discs. The first will contain a mix made up of the author's own material: some taken from "The Last Resort," some from various releases on Audiomatique and Poker Flat, and there will be new, previously unreleased works too. The mix (it should be noted that this is precisely a showcase of achievements, not serious DJ work – the tracks aren't even beatmatched, they just stand one after another) truly reflects the whole essence of Trentemoller as a musician: it all starts with voluminous, thick, enveloping sketches, no kick drums or hi-hats, all quiet and peaceful. But, obviously, it can't go on like that for long, and by the middle Andreas drops the tracks and compositions that made his name – the springy, bouncing tech-house "Rykketid," "Physical Fraction" and "Killer Kat," and so on to the max.

На Black Beauty парочка выдает обгрызанную, оборванную мелодику, рваный бит, вокал от Евы и Никлса, пропущенный через вокодер, дисторшн и бог еще знает какие фильтры, звучит это, то как Мисс Киттин, то как электро-герои Фристайлерс. Помимо узнаваемого техно звучания Dapayak здесь есть и брейк бит и намек на IDM и даже хип-хоп. Все это объединяет идея о том, что чем меньше, тем лучше: нет здесь ни мелодичных зарисовок, ни громких структурированных танцпольных рапсодий, ни приходящих и уходящих сэмплированных линий, так полюбившихся Ворту в его проектах Dapayk Solo и Marek Bois. Похоже что бита и голоса вполне достаточно, причем какого – треки "Doerti", "Sister", "Khes", "Make It Up" похожи на механизмы которые вот-вот развалятся, из них бьет пар, сэмплы подобраны соответственно: слышится жужжание, позвякивание и гудение, примерно тоже доносится из старенького "москвича" или дедушкиного запорожца, но с вокалом Евы и Никлса все приобретает некую эстетичность и аккуратность. Наряду с такими, совсем не топмодельными вещами, есть и такие, которые вполне можно представить звучащими по радио, вроде "As you Please" - красивая медленная композиция с очень выразительным вокалом Падберг. Главная вещь альбома - Black Beauty получила лестные отзывы от владычицы техно-лейбла Mobilee Anja Schneider и Matthias Schaffhauser.

The new album is a logical continuation of the previous one: all the same worn, smeared voices; all the same gloomy, hypnotic harmony (although the musician himself claims the new album is brighter and more optimistic); here too are the genre games the musician has come to love – in the recording you can make out ambient, and dub, and two-step garage, soul and God knows what else. Burial, as a true recluse, paints with his music images of lonely streets, poor neighborhoods and industrial landscapes. What he himself calls "depressing euphoria" is more like a city on which a neutron bomb fell an hour ago – everything is dead, the echoing vocal parts seem to represent the memory of life, but they are not life itself. The buzzing and crackling inherent to dubstep by definition are here in large quantities too, and of course the mightiest bass. Interweaving into a single musical collage, constantly breaking down and leveling out, shifting from structured garage to foggy ambient, all of it gives birth to such beauty that you can only marvel at how one person could have made this – and yet he did. The only "but" lies in the fact that the right of the first strike has already been lost; Burial is unlikely to outdo his first album, but to maintain his status as an interesting musician with a vast breadth – that, unequivocally.

Новый альбом являет собой логическое продолжение предыдущего: все те же стертые, смазанные голоса; все та же мрачная гипнотическая гармония (хотя сам музыкант утверждает, что новый альбом более светлый и оптимистичный); здесь и полюбившиеся музыканту игры с жанрами - в записи можно расслышать и эмбиент, и даб, и тустеп гараж, соул и бог знает что еще. Burial как истинный затворник рисует своей музыкой образы одиноких улиц, бедных кварталов и индустриальных пейзажей. То, что сам он называет "удручающей эйфорией" больше похоже на город, на который час назад рухнула нейтронная бомба – все мертво, эхом доносящиеся вокальные партии как будто являют собой память о жизни, но они не есть сама жизнь. Жужжание и потрескивание присущие дабстепу по определению, здесь тоже в большом количестве, ну и конечно мощнейший бас. Переплетаясь в один музыкальный коллаж, постоянно сбиваясь и выравниваясь, меняясь от структурного гаража до туманного эмбиента, все это рождает такую красоту, что только диву даешься, как это мог сделать один человек, и ведь сделал таки. Единственное "но" кроется в том, что право первого удара уже потеряно, переплюнуть свой первый альбом Бьюриалу вряд ли удастся, а поддержать статус интересного музыканта с огромным кругозором – однозначно.
