Jim Rivers and Misfit Night

Интервью · 17.11.2008

By 44100Hz

On 21 November, at the club Arma17, the parties of the British DJ Jim Rivers, entitled Misfit Night, kick off. Together with the head of the Misfit label, whose logo in 2008 adorned the covers of a whole series of notable releases, DJ Milton Jackson and VJ Filtered are flying to Moscow.

Jim first visited Russia about a year ago. Even then people were talking about him as a rising star from Bristol and as a DJ whose performance it is a matter of honour to attend for anyone who values clever, quality music with the prefixes tech, prog and house. Let us recall that Rivers first announced himself to the world with the release Restore EP. The record, released on Saw Recordings, became a bestseller in the music shops of England practically the very next day. After the track made it onto the 3D compilation of the Renaissance label by Satoshi Tomiie, many DJs included it in their mixes.

This autumn Jim Rivers returns to Moscow, but no longer simply as a DJ - also as the head of the music publishing house Misfit Records. The label was launched in November 2007. At the heart of its concept lay Rivers's desire to bring his boldest ideas to life and to release his own music. Although the experiments of the ambitious Bristol youth are far from being the whole repertoire of the new label. Thus, their agreement to take part in the "Vapour EP" series, released by Misfit Records, was voiced by such stars as Francesco Farfa, Sasha, John Digweed, Nick Fanciulli, Eric Prydz and many others.

In connection with his arrival in the capital and the launch of the party series, Jim Rivers agreed to answer questions for 44100Hz.

How did it come about that you took up DJing at quite an early age - 16?

It was the next logical stage of immersing myself in music. By that time my musical taste had already formed and a desire arose to learn to mix what I liked to listen to. Clubs were still something unknown to me, but even then I understood that I wanted to be a DJ.

Who was your first musical idol?

I grew up on the music my father listened to. From Paul Simon and Elton John to 10CC and The Carpenters. Most likely, my first interest in electronic music arose while listening to tracks by Moby and Paul Oakenfold's album Perfecto Fluoro.

Which style of music, in your view, is the most popular today and will be in a few years' time?

It so happens that everyone wants to play techno. To me this is funny, because very often people give this label to music that is not techno at all: prog house, deep house, electro house and so on. At the same time, I think melody is making a comeback into the mix, and tribal motifs will also become popular.

What distinguishes the new generation of DJs from the previous ones?

Two main things. On the one hand, music has become so accessible, a certain exclusivity has been lost, that many do not value it the way they valued it, say, 12 years ago. On the other hand, we are witnessing unprecedented technological progress. Today you can write, mix, play music and even run a whole label from a single laptop. In my opinion, that is pretty clever.

You tour a lot. Which performance are you looking forward to most?

Yes, this year I played with great pleasure at the clubs Pacha in Buenos Aires and Air in Tokyo. The next performances I am eagerly awaiting will take place at the legendary Shindig party in Newcastle, Great Britain, and in one of my favourite places in the world - Moscow!

What stayed with you from your last visits to Moscow? Did you manage to talk with Russian DJs? What surprises are you preparing for your Moscow fans?

First of all, I remember the fantastic audience, well acquainted with the material I played. I spent most of my time with the guys from Arma17, Abelle & Beekeeper and Serge Q. They took very good care of me, that is one of the reasons why it was such a pleasure to perform in your city. What am I preparing? I am bringing a lot of good new music with me, as well as a special VJ for greater effect. I hope everyone will be pleased! I cannot wait!

Describe the perfect party.

It is a dark club with incredibly powerful sound, filled with warmth and purity. I would play in it all night so as to warm up a little and build to a climax, that is, to make a real trip. A groove for 600 people all night long. A sea of Jack Daniels whisky... And since it is my party, I will stash away a bit of pricey pyrotechnics so as to set off some fireworks at just the right moment!

Do you communicate with your fans?

Definitely, I try to; I answer all letters when I can. After all, it is thanks to them that I am who I am now. They buy my music, they pay to get into my performances. They are the ones I think of when recording new tracks. I admit that the more popular you become, the harder it is to keep up this communication. I hope that does not happen to me

You are an ardent fan of the football club Fulham. How are they doing? Do they inspire you with their successes?

Yes, I bought a season ticket for the whole season! They are doing great! This Saturday there is a tough game against Tottenham. I cannot say that Jimmy Bullard (Fulham's central player - 44100Hz's note) has inspired me to write any new track lately, but as the weekend approaches my excitement is growing!

Which musicians would you like to collaborate with?

Guy J, perhaps, he is magnificent! I hope we will do something together next year.

And the last question: what is the idea behind your parties in Moscow?

Honestly, it is all very simple: to play good music and have a fun time. I am very glad that Milton will take part in them; he is a brilliant musician and simply a great guy! I am sure the performance will go down a storm.
