Cinema in Clubs

Everyone has long known that in Moscow's clubs you can not only spend time on the dancefloor and at the bar, make pleasant acquaintances and take part in entertaining show programmes, but also watch films. Moreover, the schedule of screenings is planned in such a way that almost every evening you're offered the chance to watch a film or cartoons for free in comfortable surroundings, drink a cup of coffee or something stronger, and then stay and continue with the standard club programme.

So, we offer for your attention a little guide to the clubs of Moscow where films are shown on various days of the week.

Few people go to a nightclub on the eve of the working week. Partying all night on a Sunday is hard - the working week and an early start lie ahead. But still, some establishments draw in visitors even on such a "dead" day. They show films.

Sunday can be spent at "Shanti", where a festival of Indian cinema is running. Does Bollywood's output stir up unpleasant memories for you? Are you not ready to sit through endless Indian songs and work out who's whose brother or sister? Don't worry. Shanti will offer you a completely different new Indian cinema. In the twenty-first century Indian filmmakers have turned nostalgia for the old films into an energy source fuelling modern, technically accomplished films - this is not a repetition of the past, not a blind continuation of traditions, but the screen adaptation of their own childhood impressions.

Every Sunday at 16:00 in the Shanti buffet the programme's curator Alexey Vasilyev awaits you. During and after the screening Vasilyev answers any questions and provides those who wish with the necessary commentary.

Monday is a hard day, and the club "Solyanka" gives all cinephiles a wonderful chance to catch a remarkable film that for some reason you missed at the time. Every Monday at 21:00 at the club it's "Kinosolyanka" by Mitya Chernyaev. The concept of "Kinosolyanka" is this: "We simply watch good films. And sometimes we watch very good films. That's how, balancing between good and very good, the film programme is built".

On Tuesday at the club "Duma" - Misha Kovalyov's own film-and-music programme "8 mm stereo". Films by not-so-brilliant directors, documentary chronicles of the '60s-'70s and low-budget home film productions from all over the world. All in 8 mm format. Stereo, music and the chirr of the film projector await you from 21:00. By the way, you can bring your own films to this club, call your friends and set up your own little private cinema on the sofas. All of this can be done on any Sunday. At the club "FAQ-café", also on Tuesday, there are not just film screenings but a whole "Film Lecture Hall with Denis Gorelov". They show old films, tell the story of their making, and discuss them after the screening. All of this takes place in the cosy Living Room at 21:00

On Wednesday we'll take a little break, but on Thursday we all head off together to the club "Gogol". Here from 19:00 screenings await you, run by the club together with the company www.clas.ru. Unobtrusive music, an interesting visual sequence on the screen - just what you need after the workday's bustle. To begin with, they'll prepare you for the viewing with a screening of cartoons and music videos, and only then be ready to watch some wonderful old cinema.

Friday is the main day for any partygoer. That's why we suggest you spend it focusing exclusively on music. And on Saturday you can attend another screening. This time at the club Bilingua. A late breakfast after a wild night can be started right around two o'clock, when cartoons, gags from the World Wide Web and music videos await you at the club, and then old musicals and musical comedies that have lost none of their charm for their age - masterpieces of world cinema.

We've drawn up a weekly plan together, but there are clubs whose schedule you don't have to remember, because film lovers are welcome there every day. At the club PodMoskovye a daily double screening invites you at 21:00 and at 23:30. Old and new cinema, but always an excellent selection and a cosy atmosphere.
