«The first harbinger of nocturnal Moscow's awakening was the opening of the club XIII. The venue's promoters did not follow the well-trodden path of Jazz Café and offered a new type of high-society entertainment. Every weekend the club's space was radically redecorated according to a party theme chosen in advance. The organisers' imagination soared from the theme of 1930s Prohibition to futuristic fantasies of the 21st century. And every week the club was sold out – all of Moscow really did gather to look at the dwarfs, freaks and giants.»
