MIGZ 2009: how2make

Интервью · 22.06.2009

By Маргарита Аминева

In our regular block of news about the Moscow festival of contemporary music and media art MIGZ - an interview with the founder of the creative association how2make, Alexander Kholenko, aka Dzhem, Dza. Sasha is also known as a member of an electronic project with Mujuice. On 26 June, however, he will perform as a duo with another young musician who goes by the creative pseudonym Ol...

44100Hz: Have you already had experience of performing together?
Dza: No, this concert will be our first joint one. We rehearse little, so we are mostly going to improvise, which, it seems to me, is more interesting.
44100Hz: Tell us more about Ol - what kind of musician is he?
Dza: I met Ol last year, but I saw his live set for the first time this autumn at a how2make party at the club "16 Tons". Throughout the whole performance I stood rooted to the spot in the hall, shaking my head to the beat. And I should note that I am a big sceptic when it comes to music, especially sceptical about Russian musicians. But if I like someone, then it is usually for a long time. Afterwards we often performed at parties and only recently decided to try playing together. Oleg used to write dance music and was even released on some European labels. But, as he himself says, his heart lay with hip-hop. All in all he is a good guy and a talented musician, and I hope something good will come out of our collaboration.
44100Hz: What will your showcase at MIGZ be like?
Dza: If we are talking about the stylistic directions we are going to present, and about our positioning in general, then by and large it is still hip-hop. But unlike the classic hip-hop producers, who created restrained and minimalist tracks by cutting out huge chunks from funk and soul, we have modern technology and a rich musical background at our disposal. So our music is not limited by the classic hip-hop canons and combines elements of different musical genres: from the psychedelic rock of the sixties to the sound that the label ~scape promoted in the early two-thousands.
44100Hz: There are several videos online from your house parties. Where do they usually take place?
Dza: The parties are thrown by our friends from the VAV crew; they take place in the most unexpected locations, kept secret until the last moment. For example, last time it was the wing of a Stalin-era building on Frunzenskaya. It was really cool, exactly like I imagined as a child. We played with Roma Mujuice, and then the police broke everyone up with a submachine gun.
44100Hz: Do you find it interesting to live in Moscow? What city could you swap it for?
Dza: Yes, Moscow is close to me in spirit. I like its rhythm. In general there are several cities where I feel comfortable and can stay for quite a long time: in summer I am going to Odessa to see friends, I would gladly go to Vladivostok, but it is far.
44100Hz: How old are you?
Dza: Almost fifteen.
44100Hz: Are you getting any education?
Dza: I have no education, I am a D-grade student and a truant.
44100Hz: How are things with how2make?
Dza: Right now the situation is rather unclear, to be honest. It looks like it will soon cease to exist as an internet label. In general internet labels are nonsense, it is already 2009! You need to be putting out cassettes. Though all of it is pleasant, the main thing is not to get too carried away.
44100Hz: Do you consider your occupation a job?
Dza: A job is something that brings in money. For now I cannot say that I will exist securely doing only music. But I am striving for that.
44100Hz: You have probably got loads of musical equipment. How often do the upgrades happen?
Dza: Actually not that much. At last I have got the feeling that I have everything I need to write music. The main hub of my musical setup is the Akai MPC 2000xl sampler. On it I put together compositions, and when there are good ones among them, I work on them in more detail in computer sequencers.
44100Hz: Who is your absolute favourite musician at the moment?
Dza: Roma Mujuice and Larik Surapov. And in general I have a profile on last.fm, it scrobbles the music I listen to in my player.
