Great German electronic musician Jan Jelinek is widely known for his distinctive approach to music composition, taking existing recordings, extracting and processing samples and melodies beyond recognition, then assembling them into new digital works of extraordinary abstract beauty. Beginning with record collecting in dub, jazz, funk, and soul, and later discovering house music, since 1998 he has released under various pseudonyms—Gramm for pulsating minimal electronics, Farben for intimate jazz-rooted dance music. His 2001 solo debut worked extensively with old jazz records, establishing his thematic approach. On 'La Nouvelle Pauvrete' (2003) he reinterpreted rock through the fictional group The Exposures, drawing from sources ranging from Bryan Ferry to Sun Ra; subsequent albums 'Kosmischer Pitch' (2005) and 'Tierbeobachtungen' engaged with krautrock. He is equally renowned for collaborations with the Japanese trio Computer Soup and Australian jazz formation Triosk, whose 2003 joint release on ~scape was titled Triosk meets Jan Jelinek "1 + 3 + 1".
