Alan Abrahams, also known as Portable, grew up in South Africa, where he led quite a lively life with his sisters, spending nights in underground clubs enjoying soul and hip-hop. He was inspired to create his own music by a Chicago house track he heard in a club: Alan began his musical career by combining African rhythms with house beats. At some point, Alan felt how much the geographical distance of his home country from the world's cultural centers hindered him. In 1997, he moved to London. There, the talented artist started releasing music on the Context and Background Records labels, and in 2002 he established his own label, Sud Electronic. It was in London that this nice guy with dreadlocks began composing music that brought him fame. Portable's complex, somewhat gloomy tracks blend elements of house, minimal techno, dub, and broken beats. Alan performs in many alternative London clubs, but not only there. He has also been heard in the Parisian Batofar, once performing in London alongside Farbena, Juan Atkins, and Andy Vaz, and he had a micro-tour in Japan with Background Records, as well as participated in the 20th-anniversary celebration of The Wire magazine in Paris.
