Tobias Thomas

Tobias Thomas joined Kompakt with his good friend and colleague Michael Mayer more than ten years ago. The duo was in love with house and techno rhythms, and this passion led them to the newly opened Cologne record shop Delirium, which later became the foundation of the Kompakt label. Both Mayer and Thomas caught the eye of Wolfgang Voigt (one of the store owners and one of the founders of the future Kompakt) with their fanatical love for music. Later, both found work at the label and are bright representatives of the "Kompakt" sound. However, it originated, so melodious, and very gentle toward the listener, during the existence of the creative project called Forever Sweet, where Mayer, Thomas, and Wolfgang Voigt’s brother, Richard, participated. Their music largely laid the foundation for the concept that Kompakt still adheres to today. Mayer himself characterizes it as "techno-pop" and is not at all embarrassed by it. Tobias has a good instinct for remarkable sensual music, which someone might call deep house, someone else lyrical minimalism, and someone might simply call it "techno for girls." But none of this is particularly important here, because however the music is labeled, its meaning remains unchanged. And here, Thomas is all right. In his DJ box is a selection of the best sensual dance music from the last ten years, as there is no such thing as old or new music for him – only good and bad.
