The need to create a new independent label hung in the air in the 90s as an opportunity to realize the accumulated potential of new ideas not only for the domestic but also world music scene, as well as an opportunity for contact with the small segment of listeners at that time who felt the need for personal exploration of new culture.
Originally, Citadel existed in the form of a pavilion trading in electronic music of various styles and directions. Obviously, the formation gathered a certain circle of people around it and served as a kind of membrane for the wave of interest from musicians and listeners. So, the creation of a new ideological space was predetermined.
However, the creative association of musicians that was formed within the young label was not aimed at creating commercially successful and fashionable music, although stable demand for a certain level of ideas and their technical execution already existed.
This was explained not simply by an unwillingness to grow together with the relatively mass listener, but rather by a desire to produce music and implement ideas that would be truly new and unconventional in understanding. Such is the musical and ideological concept of the label to this day, starting from the end of the 20th century in 1997, when the beginning of creative collaboration was laid.
Even today, the label's artists, including Moscow Grooves Institute, That Black, RЯ/БА Mutant, Alexandroid, Ozone Cocktail and many other talented musicians, are people creating the musical wave whose products are savored by fans of genres and admirers of new art not only throughout the former USSR, but also abroad.
Citadel Records represents and sets trends in practically all directions of electronic music, combining the latest technology, live drive, intuitive mentality, and professional, honest work by musicians in its releases. In addition to solo albums, the label pays great attention to the release of multi-style compilations reflecting the dynamics of musical aesthetics development in the post-Soviet space. The MOUSSON, ESPRESSO, and USILOCK series received special attention from the press and public.
The activities of the formation also include licensing of the most interesting foreign projects in the CIS territory, search and production of electronic teams and artists, distinctive ones with an uncompromising approach to their work. The Citadel creative association, including organizers and musicians, participate in international exhibitions and competitions, national festivals KAZANTIP and SUBTROPICS, organize tours and concerts, cooperate with domestic and foreign labels.
