The Sonar Kolektiv label was formed by the famous Berlin team of DJs and producers Jazzanova in 1997. If you are interested in independent electronic music, you can say with hundred percent confidence that you have their recordings in your collection. Jazzanova, Ame, Fat Freddies Drop, Clara Hill, Atjazz, Trickski, Marcus Enochson - these are just the most stellar names from their huge catalog, which will have room for all kinds of music - from jazz and bossa nova to house and techno, from hip-hop and reggae to broken beat and electro.
With over 200 releases from dozens of musicians, including Jazzanova themselves (their compilation The Remixes 1997 – 2000 was sold in an edition of over 150 thousand copies worldwide), Sonar Kollektiv can be fairly called the most famous and interesting German record company of our time. In addition, Sonar Kolektiv created two successful sub-labels - Best Seven, which specializes in dub and reggae, and Innervisions, which releases club house and techno.
The creators of Sonar Kollektiv themselves admit that for them it is more important not the styles and genres, but rather the relationships between the label's musicians, which are their main driving force. The quality of published music also always took center stage - the label's musical products are far superior to any standards set by the modern commercial music industry. The entire large family of like-minded people - which includes not only musicians and DJs but also artists, designers, promoters and other creative people - strives above all to preserve the idea of quality in what it does. Such high demands were duly appreciated in the world music community, and leading musicians from all over the world are happy to collaborate with Sonar Kollektiv. Among them are such artists as Atjazz, Capitol A, King Britt, Vikter Duplaix, Matthew Herbert, Tiefschwarz, Maurice Fulton, Madlib, Bugz In The Attic, Jazzy Jeff and many many others who over the years have connected with the Berlin collective.
Jazzanova and other artists of Sonar Kollektiv constantly perform at the best club and concert venues in the world, you can see them in the schedules of Liquid Room and Yellow Lounge in Tokyo, Fabric, The End, Ministry Of Sound in London, Batofar and Rex in Paris, Cielo in New York, not to mention the best venues of their native Berlin. Jazzanova also performed at leading festival venues, including the Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, Barcelona Sonar, Coachella in California, Detroit Electronic Music Festival, British Big Chill and Southport Weekender.
We cannot forget about the label's active radio activities. The weekly Jazzanova radio show, broadcast on Berlin radio Multikulti, has long been a source of inspiration for music lovers around the world. In turn, guest mixes by Jazzanova and musicians of Sonar Kollektiv could be heard in such radio programs as Pete Tong's Essential Mix and Giles Peterson's Worldwide on BBC Radio 1.
Last year, the "Sunny Collective" celebrated its tenth anniversary with great fanfare, and among numerous congratulations was a friendly greeting from the Mayor of Berlin - a fact that clearly speaks to the cultural status of Sonar Kollektiv.
