What happens when you cross industrial rock and house, guitar riffs with a constant beat, filtering all of this through disco with music a la David Bowie and Arabesque? And who is capable of such an experiment? There is only one answer to this question: Who Da Funk?! Not long ago, all of this resonated with Alex Alicea. Since the age of 14, this musician has called DJing his passion. Alex says, 'If I find out that there is a super party happening 8 hours away and they offer me to play for free - I will definitely go!'. Having achieved certain success in DJing, Alex was ready to take the next step. At the advice of his good friends, Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero and Jose Nunez, he started creating music, that is, he began writing his own tracks in a home studio. Very soon, Alex teamed up with another protege of Subliminal – Jorge 'DJ Lace' Jaramillo, Romero's nephew. He was known since the early 90s for his work with DJ Magic Mike, with whom they released albums such as 'Vicious Bass', 'Back to Haunt You', and 'DJ Magic Mike & the Royal Posse', playing music in the Jungle/Miami Bass style. All albums achieved 'gold' status and allowed Jorge Jaramillo to gain the necessary experience and potential for further work. After meeting Alex, Jaramillo realized that his talent and experience, combined with the impressive knowledge of house music of his new partner, could be the perfect ingredients for a new collective. They met at Romero's house and decided to combine their musical abilities: thus Who Da Funk was born. The story of the name is extremely simple: 'Really in the beginning, people knew nothing about us,' says George, 'we went on stage, played our music, and the audience liked it. They started asking themselves, 'Who the fuck are these guys?'. So, using a play on words, this name appeared, which encapsulated a bit of humor of the musicians, a slice of funk, new wave rock of the 80s and turned into a successful brand. But, as Alex says, Who Da Funk? – it's not just guitar riffs and loops, 'if it were that simple: to take ready-made samples, add rhythm and cymbals - I've done such things before, and I will never do them again!'. Instead, they created a new style, combining their musical preferences (from 80s Euro-pop to Miami Bass), and this 'rock-house' became a new direction in the activities of Subliminal Records. 'We are the second wave, the second musical direction at Subliminal, not disco-house. It is a new direction in music with a house vibe, club format. Open-minded people will definitely enjoy it!' - say Who Da Funk?! January 20th, Saturday, Dяgilev proжект presents a performance by Jorge Jaramillo (Who Da Funk), as well as DJs: Max, Mendes, Лосев, Шмель, Кореец, Smash, and Gold Sky.
