If you are familiar with acid jazz, bossa nova, and funk, fasten your seatbelts and get ready to meet Bossa Nostra.
Bossa Nostra is a new star from Italy.
Their debut album Solaria (1996, IRMA Records) showcased a mix of acid rhythms and bossa nova, dominated by the sounds of acoustic piano, saxophone, and percussion. In the track "The message from the soul sisters," the jazz vocals are reminiscent of Maysa Leak from Incognito meeting soul diva Patti LaBelle from the seventies. This is definitely bright, summery music for drives in a convertible with the top down while the wind tousles your hair. This music quickens the pulse better than Pamela Anderson's bikini. Imagine music in the style of George Duke or Grover Washington layered with heavy clarinet grooves and wah-wah guitar over a bossa nova rhythm, and it becomes clear that there’s no room for boredom. Usually, when dealing with bossa nova, there's always a risk of being "too square, like samba," and here is a case where the rhythm is rich with delightful funk beats tasting of Europe.
And, while the debut album featured well-known American singer Vicky Anderson, the second album Kharmalion (1999) was recorded with singer Bruna Lopez. It’s her raspy, breathy vocals that elevated the album from a decent Italian jazz album to a truly great Italian jazz album. The album has a touch of experiments with a Latino flavor, bossa nova rhythms intertwining with soul and more danceable forms.
By varying styles and languages, the group has never missed a beat and has provided solid jazz for seven years. Few artists in this genre have made good albums, but Bossa Nostra has achieved it, without exaggeration.
