Carl Craig is a key figure of the second wave of Detroit techno, standing alongside the genre's pioneers Derrick May and Juan Atkins. Last year he released arguably the best record of the Fabric series – number 25. Critics have long acknowledged the genius of this musical aesthete, though they point out that his brilliance sometimes borders on madness. Carl Craig is one of the few musical experimenters and devotees of the Detroit techno cult who not only became gurus for modern electronic music lovers but also found a way to stay at the forefront of the scene for many years, not giving up ground to the young and speedy. Craig picked up where Juan Atkins and Derrick May left off, creating some iconic tracks in the history of techno. Learning a lot from Derrick May in the late 80s, Craig started releasing his own tracks in 1989 on the Transmat label, owned by May, and later established his own label, Planet E Communications. Over the years, Craig has released numerous records under his own name and adopted aliases for ambient, techno, breakbeat, and jazz-influenced productions, including Paperclip People, Innerzone Orchestra, and 69. In the early 2000s, Carl released a series of mixes and compilations (Onsumothasheeat (2001), Abstract Funk Theory (2002), The Workout, Fabric 25 (2005)), along with several tracks and remixes. In 2005, he made a new version of Landcruising and titled the release The Album Formerly Known As. Craig's musical tastes were shaped in his youth by a wide range of music – from Prince to Led Zeppelin and The Smiths. Interestingly, one of today's techno greats initially chose the guitar as his instrument. However, he switched to electronic music after visiting a club with his cousin, who worked on lighting at Detroit parties. Starting with experiments on a dual cassette recorder, Craig convinced his parents to gift him a synthesizer and sequencer for his birthday. Through a classmate who knew Derrick May, he shared recordings of his early tracks with him – the birth of a new star.
