The company 'Soyuz' and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) present a groundbreaking project - an English-language portal 'Far From Moscow', entirely dedicated to contemporary Russian-language music. The portal's main goal is to support Russian music culture. One distinctive feature of the portal is that its editor, David MacFadyen, is a professor and chair of the Slavic languages department at UCLA, author of a dozen books on contemporary Russian culture, including a three-volume work on domestic pop music of the 20th century, and the owner of an extensive collection of Russian-language records (about 30,000 discs). David's recent works focus on present-day Russian cinema and television. David MacFadyen has visited the USSR and Russia multiple times; recently he was invited by Artemy Troitsky to give lectures at the journalism faculty of MSU and appeared on television. Therefore, the new portal, named 'Far From Moscow' and based in Los Angeles, offers a professional outsider's view of popular Russian music. All materials on 'Far From Moscow' are presented with humor, in a light and accessible manner. The thematic sections of the portal, including 'chanson', 'dance', 'electronic', 'folk', 'jazz', 'pop', 'reggae', 'rock', cover all genres of contemporary Russian music and make it easy to navigate through numerous news and music reviews that are published daily. Interestingly, in the 'electronic' section, one can discover talented but lesser-known Russian musicians such as Sashla Shla, Prolog, Slava, and more. The portal is designed in a popular blog or electronic diary format today, allowing every visitor, among other things, to watch video clips, listen to music fragments, and leave their comments. The portal also provides a broad list of links to the best Russian music media and recording companies - both major and small, independent ones. Details...→
