For him to enter the international DJ elite, Danny Howells needed only two years. During this time, he transformed from a "promising disk-jockey" into one of the most respected and authoritative house musicians on the planet.
Danny Howells was born thirty-four years ago in Hastings, UK. He grew up in a very musical family, where they listened to everything under the sun – from classical works by Bach and Beethoven to contemporary funk and soul. Danny got into the turntables at nineteen, taking a vacant resident spot at the local club The Crypt.
However, it took less than a year for Howells to realize that he had outgrown provincial disco clubs. A couple of months went by recording demo tapes with mixes, but the effort was worth it. One of these tapes landed in the hands of the mighty John Digweed, who immediately recognized the undeniable talent in the young man. Digweed made Danny an offer he couldn't refuse – to perform alongside him and the legendary Pete Tong at Bedrock parties. These shows left a mark on many, becoming a sort of passport to life for Howells.
Later, John Digweed confessed that he was struck by the versatility in Howells. Danny could play everything under the sun – both funky house and techno and progressive. But in any of his sets, one could feel a unique style and the hand of a mature master. From the very first beat, the very first record, it was clear who had gotten on the turntables – Danny Howells. His musical selection was perfect. He wasn't just mixing records; he was creating his own "brand," ironically named later deepsexyfuturistictechfunkhouse.
Danny Howells' further career developed rapidly. London’s Maximus, Nottingham’s Renaissance, New York’s Twilo – these are just a few of the legendary clubs that invited Danny as a resident. And everywhere he met the expectations of the audience, blowing up dance floors with his positive and extraordinarily energetic sets. In New York, they still can’t forget his ten-hour (!) performance at the Arc club – witnesses still recall the frenzy that reigned on the dance floor at that moment.
Alongside his club performances, Danny also engaged in serious studio work. In 1999, he founded his own series Nocturnal Frequencies, warmly welcomed by the club audience. The success of these compilations allowed Howells to sign a contract with Global Underground. For this most popular label, Danny made two discs – Nu Breed and the true bestseller of summer 2003, the first compilation of the 24/7 series.
Today, the level of Danny Howells' popularity is hard to overestimate. Sometimes this "howellsmania" reaches the ridiculous – recently the Dutch company Sweatyfrog even started producing rubber dolls with Danny’s face. A test batch of a thousand figures has already sold out. What can one say about the tickets to his performances, which are sold like hot cakes?
