Justo's Birthday. Celebratory Performance
Клубные российские · 11.07.2006
On July 13, Justo will turn 11 years old. For his Birthday, or as the organizers call it, for the graduation ball, the famous Latvian music collective Zodiac has been invited, along with a DJ set by Artemy Troitsky and a performance by Andrey Bartenev. Zodiac was the first collective in the music scene, at that time still our common homeland, to introduce the listener to electronic dance music whose quality could compete with the insanely popular Western disco stars of that time: ABBA, Boney M, Arabesque, Eruption, Dschinghis Khan, Chilly, and Space. Their debut album 'Disco Alliance' released in 1981 on the Melodiya label swept off the shelves of music stores in the USSR with millions of copies and became a sought-after item for Soviet music lovers. Through the 'space' melodies and rhythms of Zodiac, the audience would embark on fantastical journeys into the vast expanses of the Universe and almost consider the band members as aliens from other galaxies. The intrigue was amplified by the fact that the general public did not know the faces of the band members, as they did not perform live concerts but were entirely focused on studio work. The original line-up of Zodiac included students from the J. Vitol Conservatory in Latvia, led by future composer Janis Lusens, who after finishing the conservatory abandoned the idea of Zodiac and shifted to academic pursuits - composing music for plays and films, and creating classical pieces. Zodiac was not only phenomenal for its time but too good to be forgotten forever. In our days, with an unprecedented surge of interest in electronic music, it became the perfect moment for the legendary project's revival. In 2002, the 'shooting' project on international music channels, the trendy Russian electronic project PPK, made a cover version of the title track from Zodiac's first album. The new version, titled Resurrection, became a hit, conquering all European dance floors, including the 'club capital' of the world - the island of Ibiza. At the end of 2005, GalaRecords released the remastered debut album 'Disco Alliance' in Russia, and at the beginning of 2006, the main episode of Zodiac's second coming took place - for the first time in its history, the band delivered an exciting live performance as part of the celebration of Cosmonautics Day in St. Petersburg. After the performance, the concert organizers presented the group with a certificate for owning a plot on the Moon, so it's possible that in a few years, when free movement between planets ceases to be the fate of astronauts and the fruit of writers' and other romantic individuals' fantasies, the music of Latvia's electro-pioneers will finally find its true home. On July 13, starting at 21.30, the 11th-anniversary celebration of 'Justo' will take place. Performing: Zodiac (Latvia, live), DJ Artemy Troitsky, performance by Andrey Bartenev.
