DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, DJ Spinna, DJ Vadim, DJ Food - the list of musicians who can rightfully and with a capital letter use the prefix 'DJ' would be incomplete without the name of the French DJ CAM. Hip-hop, jazz, downtempo, dance electronics, and live music that defies clear genre descriptions - DJ CAM, throughout his fifteen-year stellar career at the forefront of the French and global musical underground scene, has managed to achieve truly diverse and remarkably interesting results.
Known worldwide as Laurent Daumay, DJ CAM started as a green teenager organizing semi-legal street parties, and by the age of seventeen, he founded the label Street Jazz Records, which later transformed into the globally recognizable brand Inflamable. His debut album, 'Underground Vibes,' released in distant 1994, over the years turned into an enduring classic of 'abstract hip-hop' and played a significant role in the genre's establishment.
Imbued with classic jazz and Jamaican vibes, the meditative, smoky, and unparalleled sound of Cam became a source of inspiration for a whole generation of the 90s, and his records were released in millions. Among DJ CAM's accomplishments are six full-length albums, remixes of Miles Davis, Serge Gainsbourg, Jean-Michel Jarre, Cypress Hill, or Michael Jackson, classic mixtapes (including in the legendary DJ-Kicks series), a jazz project in the framework of the Saint Germain des Pres-Cafe compilations, and many other equally interesting projects.
Among those CAM has worked with are J Dilla, Thievery Corporation, Guru, 4Hero, DJ Premier, Kenny Dope, and the list goes on endlessly. Today he produces young talents, performs worldwide as a DJ, and is finishing work on his seventh album.
