A Hole Covered with Gloss

In the run-up to the release of the book "Muzprosvet V 2.0" – the first large-scale history of contemporary pop music, Andrei Gorokhov arrives in Moscow for the Non/Fiction fair to present his essay-pamphlet "A Hole Covered with Gloss." It deals with the numerous crises that have characterized the state of popular music for several years now: the crisis of the sound industry, the crisis of music journalism, the crisis of the mainstream, the crisis of radio, the crisis of creative position, and so forth to the horizon. Armed with numbers and expert opinions, Gorokhov intensifies the apocalyptic psychosis: the attempt to understand what is happening in music today, what fills the minds of musicians and critics, inevitably meets with failure. The flood of trash-pop, closed communities of fans of various "styles," and internet file-sharing are just external manifestations of the crisis situation. The black hole that has gaped where once there was a comprehensible and clear musical life will consume us all.

Is there anything to fear at all, or should the new musical world rather rejoice – possibly, some clarity will emerge on November 30.
