The new hero of the 'Subelectronica' party series needs no introduction. One of the most interesting musicians and producers in English electronic music, an active member of the Pork Recordings label, and the founder of one of its main projects, Baby Mammoth, Mark Blissenden (Bliss) is performing at 'Shanti' once again. Since 1996, Baby Mammoth (Mark Blissenden and Andy Burdall) have released six excellent records of original trip-hop and downtempo on Pork. Like Fila Brazillia and Solid Doctor, BABY MAMMOTH specializes in breaks and ambient music, leaning more towards instrumental acid jazz than other trip-hop artists. Blissenden and Burdall met at Spiral Groove Records in the town of Kingston-upon-Hull, a breeding ground for British electronic music where Fila Brazillia, Bullitnuts, Leggo Beast, and Momma Gravy also hail from. In 1996, at a club in Kingston-upon-Hull, Baby Mammoth met Dave Brennan, the head of Pork, and his partner Steve Cobby (the founder of Fila Brazillia). It was then that they released two albums on Pork, the magnificent '10 000 Years Beneath the Street' and 'Bridging Two Worlds'. Their soft, non-static, close-to deep-house music became a secret weapon in Pork's arsenal. The melodic funk and acid jazz were welcomed not only in the mecca of downtempo Pork but also in the collections of DJs and music enthusiasts worldwide. Moreover, Baby Mammoth is not sequestered in the studio but actively performs solo, as a duo, or as a live band with guitarist Tom Harland and drummer Andy Dimmack. Baby Mammoth has played in several Nottingham indie projects in the past, and their inclination towards improvisation, both in the studio and on stage, is a distinctive feature of the duo that is essential for any reputable electronic festival like The Big Chill. The only performance of Baby Mammoth aka Bliss in Moscow will take place as part of the 'Subelectronica' project at the 'Shanti' restaurant. Free entry. Saturday, February 12.
