EthnoMechanics in Saint Petersburg
Клубные российские · 22.09.2010
For the third time, on October 8 and 9, the 9th world music festival 'EthnoMechanics' introduces new names, musical styles, and directions to the audience in Saint Petersburg, familiarizing them with the world of world music and inviting those who have not forgotten how to be amazed by the beauty. In the Russian language, there is no exact translation for the English term 'world music.' The closest translation, 'ethnic music,' does not entirely reflect what 'world music' represents today. Artists like Manu Chao, Shakira, Transglobal Underground, Gotan Project, Asian Dub Foundation, Oi Va Voi, Buraka Som Sistema, and Omar Souleyman fall under the 'world music' category, but their music can hardly be called purely ethnic. The term 'world music,' originating in the 80s, refers to all music that is not part of modern Western music and has its roots outside the sphere of Western European cultural influences. This category includes rock, punk, heavy metal, and other styles with ethnic elements, as well as music originally created under the influence of traditional musical cultures (e.g., Afro-Cuban music, reggae, funk, hip-hop, jazz).
