Summer Music Festival "The Trumpet Calls"
Клубные российские · 30.05.2003
On May 31, the Moscow Palace of Youth will host the Summer Music Festival "The Trumpet Calls". The festival will feature well-known Russian reggae and dub bands such as "DubTV", "Jah Division", "NetSlov", and "Kaniuly Bonifacia". The headliner of the Festival will be the famous British group "Alpha & Omega". For the first time on the MDM stage, such diverse musicians have united to participate in a Festival that reveals opportunities in the development of Russian musical culture in an absolutely new direction. The goal of the Festival is to engage a wide audience in quality domestic music and to introduce the Russian public to foreign leaders of the dub movement. As participants in the unified reggae-dub movement, each of the groups is unique in its own way.
The reggae band from Moscow that will open the festival "The Trumpet Calls" is "Kaniuly Bonifacia", which continues the tradition of roots reggae, following "Jah Division". Sometimes lyrical, sometimes socially sharp, but always deeply spiritual lyrics make the group extraordinarily popular and in demand on the Russian scene, while the powerful positive vibrations from the musicians fill the audience with energy and joy.
Another participant in the festival "The Trumpet Calls" - "NetSlov", in the opinion of the magazine OM, was named the best alternative band in 2002. The group's activity dates back to 1989 when Dan Kalashnik and Dmitry Tikov made their first recordings of instrumental music. Several tracks from the duo were published in electronic music compilations, but the first full album ELECTRONIC ETHNOLOGY came out on the Zvezda Records label only in the autumn of 1999 when the group had already moved to Moscow. A year later, the album "Outernational" was released, heavily influenced by Kalashnik's communication with one of the proponents of the rasta movement - the band "Zion Train". In the next year, 2001, Kalashnik recorded tracks for Murzenko's film "April", for which he received an award at the "Window to Europe" film festival, as well as an invitation from Yegor Konchalovsky to write music for "Antikiller". Later, in March 2002, Kalashnik musically accompanied Philip Yankovsky's film "In Motion". In the summer of the same year, the magazine AFISHA named D. Kalashnik as one of the twelve pioneers of modern Russian music alongside S. Shnurov, Zemfira, V. Gergiev, L. Fedorov, and others.
The group "DubTV" was formed in 1998 by A. Antonov as an electronic project playing in the styles of reggae, dub, ragga muffin, and dancehall. The concept of the group's live performances is "three MCs and one DJ are playing dub with much delay". "DubTV" creates a spectacular show at a European level with a change of MCs. The band successfully tours and performs not only in Russia but also abroad. In 2002 at the "Soca Reggae Riversplash" festival, DubTV represented Russia, sharing the stage with reggae-dub music stars such as B.R.Stylers, Buju Banton, and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
In the summer of 2002, "DubTV" was recognized as the 'Discovery of the Year' and received an invitation to participate in the largest European festival Rototom Sunsplash. In the same year, the band successfully toured clubs in Berlin, resulting in the release of a record on RBL Records in Germany (the dub-trance album DubTV "InDaCity").
Another participant in the MDM festival is "Jah Division", which is the undisputed leader of the Russian reggae scene. The permanent inspirer and organizer of the band, which has existed for more than fifteen years, is Herbert Morales, the son of a Cuban revolutionary and a Russian aristocrat. H. Morales sings, prays, and interacts with the audience during performances, which, combined with the musicians' excellent artistry, creates the unique sound of this magnificent group.
However, the true leader of the Festival is undoubtedly the iconic British team - "ALPHA & OMEGA". This dub-electronic project from England boldly mixes Jamaican dub vibes with truly British traditions of electronic music, bridging the gap between Massive Attack, trip-hop, and jungle music on one side, and The Orb, On-U Sound, and rave-ambient on the other. Since its formation in 1990, the band has released more than ten releases and worked with all significant representatives of its style - Jah Shaka's Sound System, The Iries, Dub Judah, and the renowned Roaring Lion Studio; The Disciples, Nishka, Daddy Teacha, and The Exile. Alpha & Omega has visited more than 30 countries worldwide with their concerts, but the performance at the Summer Music Festival "THE TRUMPET CALLS" will be the first concert for the musicians in Moscow, which long-awaited by numerous fans of this style and this group in Russia.
