For informed French, Guillaume "Ark" Berroyer is an undeniable authority in creating the signature French sound and a respected producer by all bigwigs of European show business. Behind a less than presentable appearance hides a grey cardinal of the club movement, determining the direction of many musical genres for about twenty years. At the dawn of the 80s, Mr. Berroyer (he became Ark much later) played upbeat funk on the guitar, and in the 90s, together with Pepe Bradock, organized the downtempo duo Trankilou, a couple of tracks from which became hits in France, and the records still sell well today. Since 1997, Berroyer has been closely engaged with minimal house, becoming one of its founders and promoters in France. His next successful works were now-classic tracks recorded with Matthew Herbert and tech-house artists Cabanne (Copacabannark) and LoSoul, where Ark allowed himself to play with favorite funky basslines, clicks, and otherworldly noises, like Akufen. Berroyer’s productivity showcases him as a serious musician. Under the name Ark alone (he also uses the aliases Mr. Full Destructor and Unknown Mysterioso), he has released 24 singles, 17 remixes for various artists, participated in 13 compilations, and recorded 5 full-length albums. The latest disc "Caliente" (Perlon) is provocative, danceable, and richly spiced with psychedelic voices uttering phrases like "Where's my drugs, damn it?" and "I like the rhythm your ass moves to." Mixing a bunch of musical directions and sound work techniques, Ark delivered something conditionally defined as punk-funk-click-electro-house. Where the seriousness lies and where the mockery is, it’s hard to discern: this music is for the clever.
