Chicks on Speed started as a fake band within the walls of the Munich Academy of Fine Arts in 1997. Instead of attending classes, they organized weekly illegal parties called Seppi bar. The three members of the group: Kiki Moorse (Germany), Melissa Logan (New York), and Alex Murray-Leslie (Australia) came together and created their own international, mixed style - "do it yourself". Asserting themselves in the fields of pop music, painting, graphic design, fashion, and participating in "happenings" in art galleries, the trio soon gained a reputation as a group that enjoys both mischief and fun simultaneously. Over the five years starting in 1998, during which NME and FACE promoted Chicks on Speed, they matured greatly. After the release of their first album Warm Leatherette (1998), the 'chicks' dived headfirst into the music industry with the principle of "do or die". The girls did it persistently, ignoring the press and using it to their advantage. The word COS was always the final say. In doing so, they proved that an art group can survive on its own, solely with the help and support of their fans, not the music media! The popularity of Chicks on Speed is easily motivated by their multidisciplinarity. Projects that started as mere hobbies grew into fully self-sufficient structures, allowing COS and their followers to develop their artistic freedom. Journalists could never define the musical style of Chicks on Speed, as they constantly worked in different directions and areas simultaneously. COS made clothes and did graphic design for magazines, drew "silly" monsters on the facades of buildings in Melbourne, performed in front of the Prince of Norway, hosted a weekly radio show in Berlin, managed their own web store http://www.sellout.chicksonspeed.com, and at the same time created musical hits. It's all about giving it your all for Chicks on Speed, breaking boundaries to transform, inspire, and be inspired! The most important element of creativity, in their opinion, is the dialogue and crossing of different arts with music and the ability to make it accessible to everyone! Chicks on Speed's hit version of the song Kaltes Klares Wasser in 2001 stayed at number one on the German dance charts for three whole months, their video was constantly playing on MTV and VIVA, and they were invited to perform at Erricson Dance Awards and Top of The Pops. Chicks on Speed were created for all levels of pop culture: underground and overground, and always paid a lot of attention to collaborating with other artists. In 1997, Chicks on Speed, together with Juergen Soeder and Upstart (Peter Wacha), became owners of the label Chiks on Speed records, where they release their records, as well as albums by Le Tigre, Angie Reed, Dat Politics, Kevin Blechdom, and Silvester Boy, thus supporting their favorite musicians.
