The name of Jeff Mills is synonymous with the word 'techno.' His contribution to the development and promotion of techno music is so immense that he can rightfully be called the 'guru of techno music.' Although the 'fathers' of techno music are still considered to be three people - Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Derrick May, the most famous of them all is Jeff Mills, and he is rightfully considered one of the heroes of techno culture. A champion in his unyielding pursuit of hardness in his stripped-down, almost industrial DJ sets, Mills is the latest in a long line of Detroit talents to gain international recognition. His passion for techno music began with listening to Kraftwerk, whose records stirred up a storm of emotions in the young Mills. A few years later, he became a DJ at a local radio station called WJLB and, adopting the alias The Wizard, Jeff became the main propagandist of the new sound. His programs featured a wide range of music from hip-hop to early electro and house music. It was while hosting his radio show that he was able to develop his own unique style of play. With his quick mixing skills, he began turning his performances into true spectacles. In the late 80s, he became one of the founders of the powerful Detroit organization Underground Resistance, together with his partners Mike 'Mad' Banks and Robert 'Noise' Hood. It was through Underground Resistance that Mills gained worldwide fame. Underground Resistance served as both a label and a revolutionary cell with its manifestos and pseudo-militaristic image. Their performances were always like shows: members of this movement wore military uniforms and black masks during their sets. The activity of Underground Resistance was so powerful that there was an opinion that when Underground Resistance ceased to exist, techno music as a whole would cease to exist. Mills' releases on UR were always characterized by minimalism, disorder, and arrhythmia. They combined elements of hardcore acid and industrial techno with Detroit's minimal aesthetics. However, Mills' collaboration with Underground Resistance was not permanent. In 1992, he moved to New York, where he focused more closely on his solo and DJ career (having contracts with the legendary Limelight label, as well as the notable German label Tresor). With extensive musical experience behind him, Mills became the founder of the annual seminar Musik und Maschine, where issues of techno music development were discussed and the most deserving techno musicians were awarded. In the year 2000, another significant event occurred in Mills' career. He composed the soundtrack for the famous Fritz Lang film, Metropolis (1920). Mills' famous statement 'Techno is all the things you cannot imagine' primarily applies to himself. This man is a true genius. It is safe to say that as long as there is Mills, there is techno music. Currently, Jeff Mills is actively touring worldwide, participating in various major festivals, and organizing his own master classes. December 8, Friday, starting at 23:00, club 'B1Maximum' presents a performance by Jeff Mills.
