MOUSE ON MARS
(Germany)
Mouse On Mars tracks are luxurious mini-adventures or sonic films in multiple dimensions: with dense vertical layers, constantly changing horizontally over time; this is a fully articulated organ of music.
Rob Young (The WIRE)
Mouse on Mars formed in 1993 when Andi Toma from Düsseldorf and Jan Werner from Cologne met at a metal festival and decided to form a group. After the release of seven albums and nine EPs, Mouse On Mars gained a reputation as one of the most innovative and productive acts in modern pop music. MUZIK Magazine called them the true heirs of Kraftwerk's mantle. The band has never found such comparisons inspiring. They tend to view their efforts as fragmented and constantly changing ideas that do not stand for a clear design of pop aesthetics, but seriously and sharply criticize the uniformity of one world and one sound.
Mouse On Mars are creators of dense multilayered tracks, with a pointed result rooted somewhere between the radicalism of experimentation and standard pop. The band's drum tracks often contain over 20 diverse layers: live drums, programmed and processed digital processes, as well as various combinations of the aforementioned. The band's style combines sounds from myriad genres, forcing the listener to abandon their past views.
The first MOm release (the single Frosch) came out in 1994. The vibrant fresh sound left critics speechless, and the debut album Vulvaland immediately entered the Top 5 of the UK indie charts.
Since 1997, Mouse On Mars has opened their label Sonig. Being completely independent of major record labels, the "Mice" created their own musical platform to promote their ideas worldwide. Just in the last couple of years, their concert tours have extended from Europe, Japan, and the USA to Eastern Europe, Russia, and Asia.
They have produced recordings for Stereolab and Kraftwerk members, made music for the infamous Tony Danza film, and worked on remixes for High Llamas, Cibo Matto, Pram, Anne Clark, the Pastels, Merz, Towa Tei, Oval, Merzbow, and many others.
Recently, they collaborated with house luminary Matthew Herbert, remaining true to their style, and also spent time working on the digital project Markus Popp's Microstoria and producing tracks on the side project Lithops.
The significance of the "Mice" in modern electronic music is substantial. Mouse On Mars "blazed a trail" for the ever-growing band of German and international musical villains, intertwining analog and computer sounds, electronic and non-electronic sounds into a completely new fabric. Traces of their experiments can be found in high-tech mainstream products: from Missy Elliot to Smashing Pumpkins, or in advanced dance groups like Bjork, Radiohead, or David Byrne. And on June 26, you will find traces of Mouse On Mars in the B2 club. Have a nice evening!
