The concert will kick off a series of monthly 'live' concerts of foreign hip-hop, rap, and R'n'B music,
"She gathers an unparalleled poetic bouquet while musicians like Jazzanova and King Britt create music as intricate and profound as her philosophy...." Paul Klarke, BBC1
Since 1994, Ursula Rucker has collaborated with the most renowned innovators in music. Regarded and respected by 4 Hero, Jamaladeen Tacuma, King Britt, The Silent Poets, Josh Wink, and Bahamadia, Ursula has had the honor of closing three studio LPs for 'The Roots'. Ursula has created conscious, motivated, and at the same time captivating 'stories' for The Roots. Addressing sexual exploitation in 'The Unlocking', or illustrating the lifestyle of single mothers dealing crack in 'Adventures in Wonderland', she confronts listeners with the most intimate aspects of urban reality.
Ursula possesses a haunting, supernatural ability to narrate all realities of life through gentle and enchanting lyrics.
Ursula was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated from the journalism department at Temple University.
She nursed her poetry until her debut at Philly’s Zanzibar Blue in 1994.
Despite her passion for different genres, the roots of Ursula's creativity go back to hip-hop.
Throughout the 90s, Ursula collaborated with Loveless (4 Hero/Talking Loud), Get Ready (Silent Poets/Idylic), and the Gravity Games (ABC) in their anthem Sixth Sense (Josh Wink/Ovum Recordings).
Ursula's recent work illustrates her growth as a performing artist and her amazing ability to transcend all boundaries of poetry, rather, expand them to the limit. SUPA SISTA is a continuation of previous works by Ursula, where poetry is a means of describing aspects of life that are usually preferred to be kept silent. Here she fully unfolds as an extraordinary poet and vocalist.
Touching on themes such as the fate of women, the state of black music, love disillusionment, and child abuse, Ursula, along with a number of musicians, makes an unprecedented leap and creates a provocative and socially conscious album.
The picture of SUPA SISTA was pieced together like a mosaic by musicians such as 4 Hero (Talking Loud/Mercury), Alexkid (F-Communication), and Jonah Sharp (Spacetime Continuum), alongside producers from Philly - King Britt (SYLK130), Philip Charles (SYLK130/Retrofonix Labs), Tim Motzer (SYLK130, Jazzheads), recorded in Philadelphia, San Francisco, London, and Paris.
