Dj Tiesto was named the best DJ in the world for 2002 in a poll by the readers of the authoritative British music publication DJmag. Tiesto (Tijs Verwest) - a Dutch trance DJ - is the first non-British musician to achieve such a prestigious title. Tiesto surpassed the winners of the polls from the previous two years - dancefloor icons like John Digweed and Sasha. The victory of the trance DJ, along with two other Dutch trance DJs: Ferry Corsten and Armin Van Buuren in the top ten, along with Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, likely signifies that trance music, after its decline and complete commercialization in Europe, is once again in good shape and ready to conquer dancefloors anew. 'I'm not afraid to call myself a trancer,' said Tiesto in an interview with DJmag. 'I consider myself an 'ambassador' of trance, a DJ who proves that this music can sound new and exciting without being mainstream.' Despite Americans making up about 20% of the top 100, none of them made it to the top ten, with Danny Tenaglia ranking 11th. Among other surprises, DJs from Argentina and Brazil made the list, and Slovenian techno hero Umek reportedly stormed the chart, hinting at the soon-to-come expansion of the influence of the Eastern European dance scene on the rest of Europe.
