Does Kiki Break His Fingers During His DJ Sets?
Клубные российские · 05.02.2006
"His mixes make one wonder, and it’s particularly strange: how does he manage not to break his fingers during his sets?!" - critics say about Kiki, the DJ and producer, favorite of the Berlin label Bpitch Control, releasing artists such as Ellen Allien, Ben Klock, Modeselector, Mark Broom, Smash TV.
Kiki is known in the European clubbing world as a big original; he adheres to his own untamed style bordering on whimsical wildness, represented by a mixture of hi-nrg-tech-house. It is a kind of hysterical charm and clubbing drive, spiced with subtle humor - an inseparable ingredient of Kiki's creativity. Remaining loyal to house and techno formats, Kiki leaves room for melody and instrumental basis, creating whole, truly danceable, yet listenable tracks.
Music critics compare his tracks to architectural art projects, in fact, Kiki himself sees this as an homage to his education: he is a certified specialist in architecture and design.
Kiki received his architectural education in Helsinki, where he was born and raised. However, at the age of 15, he began DJing, predominantly playing hip-hop at school parties. Teenage dance parties quickly transformed into real touring work: Kiki was invited to be a DJ in a funk group, an MC collective that was quite popular in the early 90s in Scandinavian countries. The tireless Finn was soon captivated by techno and house, and in 1992 he became a resident of Tempo, a dance club in Helsinki, and also released his debut compilation.
In ‘96, Kiki moved to Berlin to continue his architectural-design education. He was immensely impressed by the DJs of the legendary label Tresor, but soon... Kiki found himself among them! Kiki became a resident of Tresor and such legendary clubs as Pfefferbank, Casino, E-werk, WMF, and also began releasing his own radio show on twen fm, a well-known pirate radio station. Of course, international engagements from club promoters worldwide were soon to follow. Kiki has played in clubs across Europe, Tokyo, Goa, etc.
In 1998, an album with his mixes was released that received high praise from the influential German magazine De-Bug. That same year, he went on a tour. He began producing tracks for Ellen Allien, the fairy of Berlin electronics, and accordingly, he became part of the Bpitch Control clan.
Since 2002, Kiki has been collaborating on a project with Silversurfer, a Greek electronic musician. "The live performances of this pair are amazing! Such a project could only be created by a duo of Finnish meticulousness and Greek whimsy!"
In 2004, Kiki released his first full-length album Run With Me (lp/cd). He continues to collaborate with Smash TV, Martin Solveig, Thomilla, Phonique, Ellen Allien.
