Moscow Grooves Institute was formed in 1995 by two Moscow musicians - Arkady Marto and Boris Nazarov. They have released four full-length albums: 'Suround Wednesday' (1998, based on live performances by the duo on the 'Substantsiya' radio), 'Pizza' (1999), 'Commercial' (2000) and 'Tangibility' (2002, vinyl singles from it were released on the Netimage/Foundation labels in England and MPLS Ltd. in the USA). A remake of the romance 'Chrysanthemums in the Garden,' created jointly with singer Olga Rozhdestvenskaya, entered rotation on many radio stations worldwide, selling millions of copies as part of 'Hotel Costes 3-me etage.' In the past years, the group has been a finalist in a French electronic music competition three times. MGI's tracks are released by Western labels (Pork Recordings, George V, Les Maquis, Pschent, etc.) on compilations. In September 2004, Moscow Grooves Institute embarked on a tour in Poland. Today, MGI performs with a hard-hitting dance program, defining their new style as hardcore-jazz. 'Jazz because it's absolute improvisation, playing with the absence of strict forms, an unpredictable combination of various tracks often blending together; at times it sounds quite radical and shifts into industrial and 100% noise. Our sonic flow is tough enough - hence hardcore,' comment Arkady and Boris. Moscow Grooves Institute concerts usually start with a ritual solo on an unusual box with metal plates that emit strange sounds. This is a kalimba - an African instrument responsible for optimal energy exchange. The concerts are always accompanied by video installations. ULA Project ULA is unique in that it features a virtual vocalist, the first in history - a female robot, meaning all vocals are synthesized without any human involvement. Recent advancements in speech synthesis allowed Vlad Kreimer, leader of the group That Black and author of all of Yulia's songs (and Yulia herself), to bring the synthesized voice to singing with artistic and musical value. He personally assembled a studio in his apartment on which the album was recorded. The project's concept follows the model of artificial intelligence; ULA's stylistic palette is very diverse - electroclash, future pop, elegant breakbeat with original texture. In winter 2004, the ULA project with the album 'Just an engine' was presented at the MIDEM 2004 international exhibition. As a result, the project received its first broad resonance in Spain and France (RNE radio, 'Rolling Stones' and 'Trax' magazines). The album is set to be released in September by the Spanish company Red Musical. The global press highlights the uniqueness of the project and the computer technology used by Vlad Kreimer. The live version of the virtual project is the quintessence of the latest achievements not only in music, but also in its visual representation. The concert presentation was very successful at the FIRST club on September 20 within the Citadel Festival. September 23 - Jet Set club - ULA, Moscow Grooves Institute, starting at 1:00 - as part of the Citadel Electronic Music Festival in Moscow
