Jazz Night. De Phazz

De-Phazz (or De Phazz) is a German lounge project founded in 1997. The idea of creating the group belongs to Pit Baumgartner — a composer and screenwriter who had worked in advertising production and various art projects. In the early 90s, Baumgartner established his own studio. In 1994, Pit met Barbara Lahr, a former vocalist of the little-known band Janet The Planet, and was captivated by her deep and diverse voice. A year later, Baumgartner brought in American Carl Frierson, whose album he was producing at that time. The band members interpret the name of the group as DEstination PHuture of jAZZ — 'the path to the future of jazz'. The musicians have seven successful albums to their credit — Detunized Gravity (1997), Godsdog (1999), Death by Chocolate (2001), Daily Lama (2002), Plastic Love Memory (2002), Natural Fake (2005), Days of Twang (2007), which are played on dance floors and in chill-out zones around the world. De-Phazz's music features weightless, swaying bass lines, endless dub delays, and sadly vibrating vocal frequencies. Crossing the boundaries of multiple music genres in its lofty flight without losing its appealing charm and purity of style, a beautiful cloud of acid jazz, trip-hop, ambient, and jungle with a strongly pronounced jazz element, sometimes resembling intelligent drum'n'bass. The first album Detunized Gravity, along with traditional trip-hop tracks, contains some truly fantastic pieces. The second album Godsdog differs stylistically from the previous one — it is almost devoid of soul and hip-hop elements. Very cinematic, sultry jazz, exotic sunny mambo, trendy trip-hop, and fragrant lounge with retro aromas. De-Phazz's sound has become more respectable and captivating, positive and comfortable. The third album Death By Chocolate is elegant and impressive. It is witty, sarcastic, meticulous, and attentive music. Like the previous albums, you can listen to it repeatedly and discover something unexpected each time: a successful bass line, a drum break, an exquisite trombone undertone, or a muted trumpet solo, a tasty blend of timbres, or an impressive vocal treatment... De-Phazz incorporate cutting-edge lounge music discoveries of the early 21st century and the sweetest fruits of the previous decades of jazz and soul music. Today, the band is a hundred percent leader not only in the German, but also in the European acid jazz and trip-hop scene; they have literally breathed new life into the 'gentle veins' of the genre. De-Phazz evolve, and it's interesting to observe, especially since they continue to delight listeners with carefree, sparkling joy.
