DJ Gankin
Maxim Gankin - one of the Flammable Family, the permanent organizer of the main snowboarding and surfing event of the year – Flammable Camp. In high school, Maxim was a guitarist, vocalist, and author of non-trivial texts in the school punk band Silicon Tits. But, having found himself in the mountains and getting into snowboarding, he faced the difficult choice between music and sports. Naturally, all components came together in a common picture, and it’s no longer rare to find Gankin at the turntables performing melodic underground hip-hop mixed with funk at numerous snowboarding competitions, camps, and after-parties. For the past two years, Gankin has spent most of his time in Bali, where he plays in many clubs, like Sky Garden, Red Square, Black Dog.
Usually, Maxim performs in at least three roles: organizer, pro-rider, and DJ. He also excels in park design, architecture, and production.
“Where I am, there is music,” says Gankin. At the same time, he principally rides without a player, trying to experience music in good sound, preferably on vinyl.
When it comes to DJing, his collection satisfies even the most discerning connoisseurs, not to mention that it traditionally conveys the mood of the event, complementing originals with scratches and beat-juggling.
Here you can listen to Flammable Camp Special Selection 2008, the first part, from DJ Gankin.
DJ Djungl
You could write endlessly about Andrei Djungl, listing his musical accolades. You can learn more about him here.
Here’s a dialogue between Maxim Gankin and Andrei.
MG: Hi, Andrei! As one of the most experienced musicians on the Russian electronic scene, tell us how you came to music and how it has changed along with you?
Djungl: My introduction to electronic music was in 1991, which is when my career as a DJ began. At that time, electronic music was a kind of mystique for me. The musical styles I preferred back then included darkside, intelligent, drum and bass, minimal acid, ambient, IDM, and so on. Since then, electronic music has become more accessible for both listening and writing. Over time, my perception of music also changed – I began to be interested not only in electronic music but also in its roots, from where most modern electronic musicians draw their inspiration. As a result, I created an internet radio station broadcasting 24 hours: funk, dub, reggae, new wave, soul, rock, ambient, IDM.
Recently, I don’t perceive music through directional styles - there is only mood. It doesn’t really matter where the music comes from or what style it is - what matters is what mood and meaning it carries. Regarding electronic music, I have been playing house for the last 14 years. It’s the perfect formula for embodying any thoughts and moods, although I always try to expand the boundaries of styles and by combining not always compatible things, I attempt to create the perfect mix and the right mood on the dance floor.
MG: I heard you are also a good producer. Please tell us about the production that comes into being with your help, and its directions.
Djungl: A lot of music is made, and it’s all completely different. I do a lot myself, and a lot together with friends. The styles are entirely different: from acoustic music to electronic experiments. Some of it has already been released, some is still being tested by time.
MG: In which clubs have you been playing lately?
Djungl: Throughout my career, I have played in practically all million-plus cities in Russia. From Kaliningrad to Tomsk. I have played several times in Paris, Brussels, Helsinki. In Moscow, I frequently perform at places such as Simachev bar, “Solyanka”, Arma17, “Mio”...
MG: Aside from music, the Flammable Surf Camp will have a surfing school, yoga room, and planned trips to neighboring islands. Are you going to learn something? And what are your plans for this trip?
Djungl: My plan is to get to you as quickly as possible! It started snowing in Moscow, and the stress is getting stronger by the minute.
Yoga – sounds cool! I'm really interested in everything, but I think as soon as I get to you, it will all become clear.
In the meantime, I'm collecting as much different music as possible for Flammable Surf Camp, to have an answer to any question. Stay in touch!
