Laurent's latest album 'Cloud Making Machine', according to critics, defines the electronic trend for the next several years, and yet Laurent himself does not consider himself a musician. 'I only mix music from other people,' he says. Techno aesthete Laurent Garnier was born on February 1, 1966, in the suburbs of Paris. By the age of 16, he discovered disco clubs and musical programming, at 18 he moved to London, and then to Manchester. There, Laurent, then a waiter, fulfilled his dream - he was hired at the famous Manchester club Hacienda, where he performed under the amusing pseudonym DJ Pedro. After a couple of years, Garnier went to New York, listened to house music, bought records, and returned to Paris to promote new house trends in his homeland, where nothing of the sort had been heard before. Within a couple of months of performances in clubs and garage raves, Garnier became the most popular DJ in France. In 1994, the Frenchman released his debut album 'Shot in the Dark', which sold a decent 70,000 copies for a francophone album, and together with his friend Eric Morand, he founded the label F Communications. This label made a breakthrough in the dance scene - Laurent and Eric managed to gather within its framework the most interesting intellectual electronic musicians, inviting them to record their creations not in expensive studios, but at home. After that, awards poured in for Garnier: at the British Dance Music Awards, the Frenchman received titles such as 'Best DJ' and 'Best Musician/Producer', his record company F Com - an award for 'Best Label,' and the Parisian club Rex - a prize for 'Best Club' thanks to Garnier's original parties 'Wake Up'. In 1996, the British press recognized the Frenchman as the 'Best DJ of the year on the international scene', and Laurent himself released a giant compilation 'Laboratoire Mix' of his best works on the English label React. Even when Laurent crossed the threshold of 30 years, he continued to amaze his fans with his energy: he released his second album '30', performed on the main stage of the first Parisian techno festival in front of 100,000 clubbers, played a 12-hour techno marathon 'Minuit/Midi' and began to turn his sets into shows with choreographic performances. Today Laurent Garnier is a veteran and simultaneously a pioneer of the global electronic scene. For example, in 2003, Laurent released his second retrospective collection 'Excess Luggage' and even wrote a book 'Electrochoc' about the history of techno music. On the other hand, his label F Com releases releases by St. Germain, Alexkid, Mr. Oizo, Jori Hulkkonen, Aqua Bassino, and other current electronic musicians, and Garnier regularly plays at shows for Kenzo and Jean Charles de Castelbajac. Moreover, at the beginning of 2005, the Frenchman released a new album 'Cloud Making Machine', recorded in an unusual company for the musician, who critics were used to classifying among techno luminaries - Norwegian jazz pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and Tunisian singer Dhafer Youssef. As a result, Garnier created a work that blends jazz, electro, techno, intellectual hip-hop, and even rock, which critics compare to the creativity of Massive Attack.
