In Miami at the Annual Winter Music Conference, the 26th International Dance Music Award (IDMA) ceremony took place. Over a million votes from dance music fans in over 180 countries were processed to identify the most outstanding achievements in 56 categories. The awards ceremony this season took place on March 10, with the most awarded this year being Armin van Buuren from the Netherlands – Best European DJ and Best DJ in the world for the second consecutive year. His radio show State of Trance won for 'Radio DJ Show', and the Dutch label Armada Music, one of whose founders is van Buuren, was recognized as the Best Global Label of 2010. Adding to this, the Best Trance Track – their collaboration with British singer Sophie Ellis Bextor, 'Not Giving Up On Love' (Ultra Records/Armada) – and the Best Mix – 'State of Trance 2010' (Armada Music) – complete the set of prestigious awards. On May 6 and 7, Armin will visit Moscow with his show Armin Only: Mirage. Among the American names, Deadmau5 clearly stands out, named Best American DJ and Best Artist of the past year. His track 'Raise Your Weapon' (Ultra Records/Mau5trap) won in the 'Best Dubstep/DnB/Jungle Track' category. Among the young artists, Dutch electro-house sensation Afrojack and young Swedish DJ and producer Avicii excelled. Afrojack was named Breakthrough of the year among DJs, while Avicii was among solo artists. Afrojack was also recognized as the Best Remix Artist. Holding onto his position as Best Producer is David Guetta. Their track 'Gettin' Over You' with Chris Willis featuring Fergie & LMFAO was awarded Best Dance Composition, with the music video for the same song winning Best Music Video. Lady Gaga won the award for Best Pop Dance Track with 'Alejandro', and Rihanna for Best R&B Track with 'Only Girl (In the World)'. The Best House Track went to Barbara Streisand and her Duck Sauce. Interestingly, this very same composition also won in the Best Underground Dance Track category. The Swedish trio Swedish House Mafia also stood out at this year's awards, being named Breakthrough of the year among groups and Best Group. Their track 'One (Your Name)' featuring Pharrell also won in two categories: 'Best Electro/Tech House Track' and 'Best Progressive Track'. The Best Music Website remains Beatportal.com; the best radio station this year was BBC Radio 1. And the Best New Product of the year was – guess what – of course, the Apple iPad! It is also worth noting that the award list includes a number of specific niche professional nominations such as Best Vinyl Cartridge, Best Disc Player, Best Mixer, Best Software, and even Best Headphones.
