Ricardo Villalobos Recorded Fabric 36

Ricardo Villalobos, an artist in the truest sense of the word, has an astonishing ability to create with such passion in one of the most limited genres of electronic music that his sound carries a crazy energy into the world. He recorded a mix for the Fabric label for the first time.

"I started with bongo drums and conga style; back then, I liked percussion and South American music. To some extent, the electronic music we dance to is very similar to African and South American drumming music. I was like a child, always observing and trying to understand what makes people dance. It has always truly captivated me. If you're a musician, you are constantly in search of this. I am endlessly concerned with the dance floor – why people dance, what lies behind it," says Ricardo Villalobos.

As he immersed himself in the world of electronic music and searched for the secrets of the dance floor, Ricardo began to throw illegal parties all over Germany. Thanks to these parties and his innovator talent, he was warmly welcomed into the Playhouse label family. Records were spinning, discs were recorded, labels were opened (and quite quickly closed – "Running a label is not my calling") and it became clear that both careers – as a DJ and a composer – rapidly exceeded even his boldest expectations. Naturally, he enjoys the opportunity to present his rhythmic, percussive, and melodic sound so broadly, but along with this position inevitably comes one single problem that has pursued him throughout his successful career: crazy popularity.

"Of course, I love being a DJ, and I don’t see it as my job. It's engaging for the soul; I truly enjoy that people dance to the music I play for them. But I can't stand when you are loved only because of your popularity, with no interest in your creativity. People can be your fans without paying attention to your music – it's all again about popularity. But overall, I of course love my work with all my heart."
