Seiji in Moscow for the First Time
Музыкальные российские · 15.09.2009
The headliner of The Muzik party at Ikra club this Friday, September 18th, is the musician Seiji, whose real name is Paul Dolby, primarily known for his involvement in the West London group Bugz In The Attic, the main legislators and pioneers of 'broken beat' music, often simply referred to as 'bruk'. Along with his comrades Orin 'Afronaut' Walters, Darren 'Daz-I-Que' Benjamin, Kaidi Tatham, and other members of London's main musical mafia, Seiji is responsible for a bunch of original hits, remixes, energetic club sessions, and other 'booty-la-la'. Before diving into the unruly ranks of the 'Attic Bugs', Paul Dolby already had significant musical experience: his mother sent him to study cello, and from the age of 17, the young talent began to expand his musical toolkit using samplers, MIDI keyboards, and vinyl records. In the early 90s, he discovered hardcore, jungle, and later house music. His first releases came out on the well-known jungle and drum-n-bass label Reinforced Records, and in 2000, the album 'Just Another Number' appeared, which Seiji recorded jointly with his main partner G-Force. This is where the main part of the story begins - together with Orin 'Afronaut' Walters, Seiji joined Bugz In the Attic - a collective of eight members. The 'Bugs' founded their own party - the legendary sessions called Co-op, which took place for several years at the London venue Plastic People and were recognized as one of the best parties in the vast club city, as well as their own label Bitasweet Records. It was on this label that Seiji released the record with the unpretentious title 'Loose Lips', bringing Paul worldwide recognition - it was a 100% hit, a hip-hop record at house speed with absolutely broken rhythm. Since then, Seiji's career, both solo and as part of Bugz In The Attic, has been steadily on the rise. As part of the 'Bugs' and independently, he remixed for Amy Winehouse, 4 Hero, Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, was signed to the major label V2 Records, which released Bugz In The Attic's debut album 'Back in the Doghouse'. Working solo, Seiji has been released on many significant labels of the contemporary scene: Ninja Tune, Tru Thoughts, Sonar Kollektiv, Compost, Far Out, !K7, Kindred Spirits, Giant Step, XL Recordings, and many others. He remixed Basement Jaxx, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, produced music for many projects and musicians. In particular, he became the main producer and co-author of the cult album of the Irish diva Roisin Murphy 'Overpowered'. A day before the performance at Ikra club, on Thursday, September 17th, Seiji will play a special set on the internet station RTS.FM.
