Spaces - a Touch Musical Instrument

A new interactive application for a touch-based musical interface called Spaces has been released in the USA. Spaces features a screen divided into colorful stripes, and by touching them in different directions, one can create a spontaneous musical composition from instantly generated sounds. The concept of the Brick Table interface belongs to California musicians and members of the experimental collective 1dBT, Jordan Hochenbaum and Owen Vallis, who actively use this invention in their installations and performances. One of the installations is called Weather Report: a person or group of people move a special object across a screen displaying a map of the USA. Different areas on the map correspond to specific sounds that change throughout the day based on the temperature.
