Smokin Jo is the only woman to have received the prestigious 'DJ of the Year' award from the reputable DJ Magazine in the world of electronic music. She is considered one of the most talented DJs and producers, an undeniable star of the English dance scene in the past decade.
Jo started her career by attending numerous underground raves and noticing a certain lack of women behind the decks. She wanted to become one of the first. After purchasing turntables in 1991 and several months of practice, Jo was given the opportunity to play a set at the legendary Trade when one of the DJs fell ill. She lit up the dance floor and secured a residency for almost three years. Her unique and mesmerizing energetic funky house style earned her a niche in the world of dance music. Jo took the name of the famous boxer Smoking Joe Fraser so that a female name would not evoke prejudices.
Following Trade, promoters recognized Jo's talent, and she became a regular guest at the most advanced clubs in the UK: Cream, Pushca, Ministry of Sound, Renaissance, Progress, Sign of the Times, and Miss Moneypennies, as well as at Boys Own, Betty Ford Clinic, with Pete Tong, Paul Oakenfold, and Tiesto on the Heineken Thirst Tour '03 and Tribal Gathering, warming up crowds in 35 countries worldwide. Thanks to the recognition of her unique talent, Jo had the opportunity to go on a world tour, presenting her own sound there.
International recognition led her to collaborate with top stars — she DJed at The Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Todd Terry concert at the Albert Hall, at the Skunk Anansies' album release party, the parties of the Jamiroquai South African tour (by the way, Jay Kay couldn't resist and started dancing during her set), as well as at fashion shows and receptions for Alexander McQueen, Michiko Koshinos, and Julian Macdonald.
Jo spends the summer season in Ibiza: she regularly plays sets at Space, Pacha, and Privilege, and was reintroduced as a Trade@Manumission resident for the whole island's summer, where her energizing sunrise sets became known thanks to Danny Rampling and Danny Tenaglia, who described her play as excellent. She also launched a series of her own parties on the island, which DJ Tim Sheridan called NastyDirtySexMusic, and they were hugely successful in Ibiza. The season soon ended, but the NastyDirtySexMusic story didn't stop there. Back in London, Jo and Tim continued their joint performances, but now at the famous Ministry Of Sound. Once a month, their seven-hour sets continue to delight all fans of unconventional house and lovers of free musical associations born in the minds of these two extraordinarily talented DJs.
Together with Terry Hart, Jo gave life to the Nude project, which they see as a new delightful club concept. Jo skillfully came up with provocative names for her parties. The Nude concept — what you see is what you get — involves combining fashion, avant-garde performances, theatrical productions, professional choreography under minimal techno, deep house, and electro from the best representatives of these genres. Starting in small underground clubs, Nude has now boldly moved to serious venues like Ministry of Sound, Space, and Ibiza beaches.
Jo also mixed a cover disc for Muzik magazine. In addition to her past remixes of hits like 'Make U Whole' by Androncius, 'High' by Hyper-Go-Go, 'Charlie Big Potato' by Skunk Anansie, Jo is now working on her new tracks, including 'Yanu', which was warmly welcomed by journalists and DJs. Her records 'Psycho Bitch EP' and 'Fishbone Sleepers' by Pete Heller, released under the Junior label, were hugely popular. Danny Tenaglia and Pete Tong from BBC Radio One are big fans of Jo and play her music in clubs and on air. In Ibiza, she represented MTV channel, and at Mardi Gras, Radio One. Jo also signed a contract to produce tracks from Ibiza for Pete Tong's Essential Selection weekly show.
Jo also appeared in Brett Easton-Ellis' book 'Grammarama', and the Storm modeling agency included her in their 'star portfolio' along with Robbie Williams and All Saints; ELLE magazine placed her at 26th in the Hot 100 For 2001 lists.
And of course, Smokin’ Jo doesn't see musical borders anymore; she experiments with different styles, and the music she plays changes and transforms, taking on new forms. Currently, Jo plays Minimal and Electro House. Her talent is recognized, and new achievements await her.
