Sonar (English: sonar, an abbreviation for Sound Navigation And Ranging) is a means of detecting underwater objects. What does this term have to do with electronic music? Quite direct, as besides its primary function—detecting underwater sound impulses, Sonar is the largest festival of electronic music and contemporary art in Europe. We have learned about the participant lists and dates for this wonderful event. Headliners include names such as Goldfrapp, Justice, Erol Alkan, and Hercules and Love Affair.
The fifteenth Sonar will take place on June 19, 20, and 21 this year, focusing on two main themes – "female factor" and "hybridism". The first will showcase contemporary work from the fairer sex: the duo Goldfrapp, sweet-voiced Roisin Murphy, the brutal and extraordinary M.I.A., and Camille – the new muse of French chanson. The other theme of the festival - "hybridism" emphasizes new dance music, predominantly characterized by electro-rock, featuring: Justice, Yelle, Diplo, Spank Rock, and Boys Noize.
The festival venue will be the site of two reunions. With their program, the synth-pop legend Yazoo will perform, as well as the veterans of Detroit techno, founders of the cult label Underground Resistance Mike Banks and Jeff Mills.
Brothers Jamie Cullum and Ben Cullum will join forces with former Underworld member Darren Emerson to present the project BC vs JC featuring Darren Emerson.
The queen of electro-clash Miss Kittin will perform with a new program. Daedelus will also showcase his live set, along with new Ninja Tune signings, The Heavy, and many more.
It should be noted that the upcoming Sonar will be held for the fifteenth time, and according to the organizers, this is quite a milestone, so we can certainly expect surprises.
