Subelectronica - uptempo from Paul Murphy

Great news from Subelectronica: the new guest at Shanti brings a collection of the freshest London uptempo. Paul Murphy found himself behind the decks for the first time in the late 70s completely by chance: Murphy was a promoter of the trendy party The Kingswood Club, and the invited DJ got scared of the bad weather and didn't show up. Murphy had to take matters into his own hands. Partly thanks to this event, Paul Murphy soon became the inventor of the famous Jaffas, parties at The Horseshoe on Tottenham Court Road, instilling a love for jazz in the London dance scene. Among the guests at Paul Murphy's parties, you could easily meet such personalities as Morrisey Mullen, Paz, Breakfast Band, Gonzalez, and Heath Brothers. His resume includes owning a music store in Clerkenwell - Fusion Records and organizing a concert by the great Brazilian Tania Maria under the aegis of the pivotal YMCA association for Paul Murphy's generation. Only in the 80s did Paul Murphy open clubs and club nights in Britain with such telling names as the Brighton Jazz Room (still existing!), The Wag Club, The 100 Club, and The Comedy Store. From 1984 to 1986, he was the driving force behind the Palladin Records label, signing and releasing artists like Phil Upchurch, Working Week, and Tommy Chase. If these names and titles mean little to a young clubber, in 1985 Wire magazine, when choosing the DJ of the year for the first time, named Paul Murphy as such. Further comments are superfluous. After the fabulous 80s, Paul Murphy unexpectedly disappeared from the club scene, spending several years in seclusion in Ireland, and the promoters of London's Blue Note had to exert a lot of effort to persuade him to become a resident. Following Blue Note, Afro Art Records and its founder Ashley Beedle (X-Press 2) were able to boast a contract with Paul Murphy. Paul Murphy's releases on 'Ska East of the West' and 'Big Chief' found their way into playlists of Boris Dlugosch and Tim 'Love' Lee, and his latest single 'Jazz Room' The Spiritual South Mix topped Gilles Peterson's personal chart. Following this, remixes for Ashley Slater, Kid Loco, Neon Heights, and Solar Apple look like a matter of course. The only performance by Paul Murphy in Moscow will take place as part of the 'Subelectronica' project at Shanti - don't miss it!
