Talvin Singh, a dusky musician resembling Raj Kapoor, is the pioneer of what is usually referred to as the asian underground: trip-hop and jungle played on tabla and sitar, fragrant rhythms, smoking electronica. At Singh's initiative, young immigrants from India and Pakistan, settled in London, found a worthy occupation: to repeatedly prove that this whole dance boom was invented by dervishes many centuries ago, and that an Indian with a drum and a girl with a honeyed voice will play and sing something that Goldie couldn't even dream of. Singh produced a compilation of young talents "Anokha: Sounds of Asian Underground", now already a classic, and even opened the Anokha club in London, where instead of Roni Size or Paul Oakenfold, the sounds of Ananda Shankar and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, rearranged according to the time and place, could be heard. Singh's debut album "OK" received the prestigious Mercury Prize in Britain.
