Inspired by new sounds, technologies, and political upheavals, the 90s opened up a new musical era for us. For instance, Berlin, Frankfurt, and other German cities actively promoted nightlife, alongside techno and house music.
The first Love Parade took place in Berlin in 1989, after which musical trends for the next ten years were established. The German Summer of Love transformed the mindset of the entire youth, establishing the first principles for creating techno music: limitless experimentation in the context of "Do it yourself." Clubbers became DJs and promoters, labels and vinyl shops began to emerge, and the independent techno scene gained momentum! At that time, everything seemed possible...
"We call it techno!" - is the name of the film about the era of techno's emergence in Germany. Directed by Maren Sextro and Holger Wick, the film includes exclusive interviews, reviews, and mostly unpublished video and photo archives from 1988-1993.
Moreover, "We call it techno!" features performances from artists such as Ata, Cosmic Baby, Mijk van Dijk, Elsa for Toys, Hell, Mike Ink., Jurgen Laarmann, Mark Reeder, Tanith, Triple R, Upstart, Sven Vath, Wolle XDP, and many others.
