Wookie Appears in a New Role

For the first time in his rich career in dance music, Wookie, a notable figure on the British garage scene, grabbed his headphones and stepped behind the DJ booth. Surprisingly, despite his fame for creating club classics and pushing musical boundaries, Wookie (aka Jason Chue) has never had the urge to DJ. "It's quite challenging to showcase yourself and your achievements as a producer, it's much easier to shine if you show people what kind of DJ you are and what you've accomplished in that art," says Wookie. "Now that I'm also a DJ, I've become much more sensitive to everything happening around me, not at all like before. Now I realize I was quite limited in terms of music. I never cared about what others were doing. However, now I'm buying records and listening to what my colleagues in the field are doing, and this inspires me to create something better." Wookie's shift from garage to soulful house music is connected to the feeling that urban house could become the next hit in the club scene in the UK. However, Wookie suggests that the 'urban house' boom may just be a myth. "I don't believe that urban house will become very popular anytime soon because it's nothing more than a new name for music that has existed for a long time," he comments. "People tend to label everything, and we've encountered yet another new name that will eventually acquire its individuality." Nevertheless, Wookie agreed that garage music in the UK is in complete decline. "I believe it has been exhausted and used up," laments the musician, "and it was used up much earlier than its time; by the end, it was completely destroyed." Currently, Wookie’s new attempt at soulful house music is presented in the form of his latest track 'Do You Believe', recorded with Xavier on Wookie's own label, Lovestar Music.
